The safety, function, historic integrity and unsurpassed beauty of Belle Meade Boulevard are under threat by the city’s own commissioners, who are planning a pedestrian walkway along its storied median.
Friends of Belle Meade Boulevard urge Belle Meade City Commissioners to halt the “Boulevard Beautification and Pedestrian Plan” until those most impacted by the changes - the residents and taxpayers of the City of Belle Meade - have approved all plans. The current plan will endanger pedestrians, destroy the Boulevard’s purpose as a vehicular road and ruin the incomparable aesthetic that makes Belle Meade Boulevard so beloved.
This “Boulevard Beautification and Pedestrian Plan” was quietly passed without the City of Belle Meade’s own required notifications to and approvals by adjoining residents, in violation of strict requirements. Despite significant concern from residents, commissioners are moving forward without giving voice or consideration to outcries from hundreds of Belle Meade citizens and concerned neighbors.

Friends of Belle Meade Boulevard seeks:
Friends of Belle Meade Boulevard is a nonprofit organization established by alarmed neighbors who care deeply about the safety and beauty of the Boulevard and have serious concerns about the creation of the “Boulevard Beautification and Pedestrian Plan,” which will reshape the entire length of Belle Meade Boulevard and narrow its traffic lanes to make room for a dangerous pedestrian walkway along the median. This unsafe approach significantly increases pedestrian use of Belle Meade Boulevard without increasing safety measures.
We have prepared a resolution for the Belle Meade Board of Commissioners’ approval that will recognize the importance of Belle Meade Boulevard from a historical and cultural perspective and require that any construction or infrastructure changes by the City to the Boulevard be subject to a referendum requiring at least an 80% majority vote in favor of the proposed construction.
